Hazardous Waste

Find out about hazardous waste and how to safely dispose of it.

Waste is hazardous when it contains substances or has properties that might make it harmful to human health or the environment.

The term 'hazardous' does not always mean that such waste is immediately toxic, though some can be. By improving the way in which we manage all wastes classified as hazardous, we reduce the risk they might pose now and in the future.

The most common types of hazardous waste produced by householders are shown below. Devon County Council provides facilities at all recycling centres to handle reasonable quantities of hazardous waste including:

  • Spent engine oil and vehicle batteries
  • LPG gas cylinders
  • Old paint
  • Weed killers/solvents/bleaches/old medicines/petrol/diesel

Please see Devon County Council's website for more information.

Asbestos

Small quantities of bonded asbestos (e.g. sheets, pipes and tiles) can be disposed of at DCC recycling centres for a charge. Find out more here.

Could I have asbestos in my home?

Houses built or renovated before 2000 may have asbestos materials. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) website has information on what to look for at home and in the workplace.

If you still suspect that there are asbestos materials in your home, it may be best to leave them alone if they are in good condition and not likely to get damaged.

Removing and disposing of asbestos

  • If you live in rented accommodation, speak to your landlord.
  • If you have only very small amounts of asbestos material to dispose of, Devon County Council can help.
