West Devon Borough Council will be formally responding to Devon County Council’s consultation, objecting to plans to introduce pay and display parking in Okehampton and Tavistock.
The decision was made at a Council meeting on 19 December.
Cllr Adam Bridgewater, Lead Member for People and Communities, said: “We have concerns about the proposals as they are in complete contrast to our own approach towards car parking charges.
“We believe that introducing these charges will have a negative impact on the local economy, businesses, the environment, and local residents. We also believe that the County Council hasn’t provided enough evidence to justify their reasons for the proposal.
“We will be writing to the County Council as part of the consultation to object to the plans. We are also requesting an urgent meeting with the County Council and other stakeholders so we can fully understand how increasing on street parking could reduce congestion, improve air quality, provide a safer environment, and what evidence supports this view.
“I would encourage all local residents to have their say in the consultation and make their views known.”
