Walking routes in West Devon

From flat, short strolls to longer walks, whichever walking route you choose, they all pass through stunning scenery and can easily be linked to visitor attractions and accommodation.

Short walks

Okehampton is truly a destination for walkers and forms the starting point for many short walks to the east and west of the town, weaving through the wooded valleys and revealing expansive views of the Dartmoor. This series of 8 walks around Okehampton are available under the download area at the right-hand side of the page.

Further south, a series of four walks around Tavistock and Yelverton forms part of the Drake's Trail with highlights including Burrator Reservoir and Sir Francis Drake's former residence at Buckland Abbey.

The Tamar Trails are a fine collection of walks and multi-use trails within the historic mining and natural landscape of the Tamar Valley defined by the River Tamar itself. Immerse yourself within the tree canopy or on the river with Tree Surfers, and find places to stay, visit, eat and drink at the Visit Tamar Valley.

Longer walks

The West Devon Way is a 37-mile way marked route between Okehampton and Plymouth which skirts the western edge of Dartmoor, passing historic settlements, crossing moorland, following green lanes and woodland tracks.

The route can be separated into eight shorter, with each stage starting and finishing near to a bus stop. The route can be linked to the Coastal Path at its southern end. Three of the stages can be downloaded from this page.

The Two Castles Trail is a 24-mile way marked route between Okehampton and Launceston, meandering through rolling countryside full of history, marked by imposing Castles at the beginning and end of the route.

The Tamar Valley Discovery Trail is a 30-mile way marked route between Plymouth and Lifton through scenic woodland, historic river quays and rural villages set alongside the Tamar River.
