Even though the number of empty homes in West Devon is below the regional and national averages, we continue to do all we can to bring the empty properties we do have back into use.
The most common way of doing this is by contacting property owners, encouraging them to either occupy the property or sell it on the open market.
Many empty properties are reported by neighbours once they become unsightly, neglected, or used by people that shouldn’t be there. These reports often follow the death of the owner. We use in-house records and the Land Registry to gather information but also work with third-party ‘heir hunter’ organisations to locate family members, these services are provided free of charge.
If you are concerned about an empty home near where you live then let the Council know and we will check if we are able to take any action.
