Children's Centres

Devon Children's Centres are run by Action for Children. They offer support available for families with children aged 0-8 who need extra support, through targeted Early Help Services via group and 1:1 family support.

Courses are available including Incredible Years Parenting, Home Coaching Programme, Incredible Years for children on the autistic spectrum pathway or with language delay, Step by Step, Antenatal courses and Baby Massage.

Somerset Community Foundation

Grants for children up to 18 yrs old

  • Costs of attending a sporting event, a concert or an outdoor activity
  • Sessions of music, art, hydro or rebound and other sensory therapies
  • Horse riding
  • A financial contribution towards a piece of equipment to enable you to take part in a music event or an outdoor activity, eg a seating system or a switch or a support to sit in a boat
  • Extra transport costs
  • Extra costs for another carer to provide support at an event
  • A financial contribution towards an activity holiday
  • Financial support to cover costs to attend a special family or social gathering.

Devon Educational Trust

This trust offers awards to help with education, employment and wellbeing.

Applications are invited from, or on behalf of, young people under the age of 25 years and who live in Devon.

Awards normally range from £100 to £500.

Gibbons Family Trust

Grants from the Gibbons Family Trust are given to assist children and young people under the age of 25 that live in Devon (with a preference for East Devon), and / or the Isle of Thanet in Kent.

Grants are made at the discretion of the Trustees for a wide variety of reasons. The Trust Deed asks the Trustees to consider the care, benefit, support, education, or otherwise for the welfare of children and young persons. Trustees can also

  • Award grants to charitable residential and day care establishments for children and young people, including those who are disabled;
  • Award grants for or towards the maintenance and educational advancement, training and recreation of children and young people.

Grants are NOT made for the following reasons:

  • Any fees payable of an ongoing nature (such as regular payments for education),
  • To individuals for trips overseas for any reason,
  • To private schools,
  • For retrospective funding.

NHS Healthy Start

You'll qualify for the Healthy Start scheme if you're at least 10 weeks pregnant or you have at least one child that's under 4.

In addition, you must be receiving any of the following:

  • Child Tax Credit (only if your family's annual income is £16,190 or less)
  • Income Support
  • Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance
  • Pension Credit (which includes the child addition)
  • Universal Credit (only if your family's take-home pay is £408 or less per month from employment)

You will also be eligible for Healthy Start if:

  • you're under 18 and pregnant, even if you are not claiming any benefits
  • you claim income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) and are over 10 weeks pregnant
  • you, your partner or your carer get Working Tax Credit run-on only after you have reported you're working 16 hours or less per week

To find out if your family earns £408 or less per month from employment whilst claiming Universal Credit, look at your 'take-home pay for this period' on your monthly Universal Credit award notice.

Take our Hand is a national charity supporting young people who are dealing with bereavement. They offer care packages, therapies and peer support for people aged 16 to 25.

Kids meals for £1 in Asda this Summer

Asda has announced that kids across England and Wales can eat for £1 in Asda cafes, 7 days a week with no minimum adult spend required.

This is in an effort to help families in need.

Meals served will be hot or cold dependent on the store and baby food is also available.

Friends and Families

Friends and families support families with children living with a disability in and around Plymouth, extending into the South Hams and East Cornwall. Services and activities are provided for the whole family so that everyone gets the chance to be involved.

They also support parents and carers of disabled children with financial information and applying for benefits, and have a lending library of equipment such as beach wheelchairs and weighted blankets.
