From 24 February, 1000 households in West Devon will be trialing a new waste and recycling service. For those involved, their food and dry recycling will continue to be collected weekly, but their black sacks will be collected once every 3 weeks.

West Devon residents have been asking the Council for some time to help them recycle more.  So last year they launched an improved recycling service, with more items collected for recycling.

Now that more items are part of the weekly recycling collection there should be very little waste for residents to put in their black sacks.

This trial will help West Devon Borough Council evaluate how we can all reduce our environmental impact through increasing recycling and reducing our carbon footprint.

Cllr Caroline Mott, the Lead Member for Waste and Recycling said: "This is the exciting next step in our journey towards a more environmentally friendly waste and recycling service.

"Did you know that nearly half of the waste that residents put in their black sacks could have been recycled.  Just imagine the huge reduction in waste going to the incinerator in black sacks if everyone recycled all that they could."

Throughout the trial West Devon will be collecting lots of information, including residents' feedback, to let them know how things are going.

Progress of the trial will be reviewed by the Council after 6 months.  Areas of West Devon where the trial is taking place include parts of Tavistock, Okehampton and Bridestowe Ward.  Those homes which are in the trial will now have received a letter in the post telling them what they need to do.

They are also being offered the option to sign up for an email bulletin to remind them of their black sack collection and give them helpful waste reduction tips.

Cllr Mott continued: "We want to support the residents through this trial and will be providing them with lots of advice and tips for reducing their waste and increasing their recycling.

"We will be also holding roadshows in the trial areas and have identified ward members and local champions who can support residents through the trial.

Road Shows will take place:
